BACKGROUND
YADAM Foundation is an Ethiopian non-profit delivering nutrition intervention in partnership with government, donors, and communities. As part of its strategy to strengthen financial sustainability and reduce dependency on restricted donor funding, YADAM has identified social enterprise development — unrestricted, mission-aligned income through fee-based services, social-impact products, or income-generating ventures — as a priority growth area.
PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT
YADAM Foundation is seeking an experienced Social Enterprise Strategy Consultant to design a costed and actionable social enterprise strategy and lead its early implementation, diversifying YADAM's income base without compromising its core nutrition mandate.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assess YADAM's existing assets, capabilities, networks, and market opportunities relevant to social enterprise development
- Identify and shortlist priority social enterprise concepts, with feasibility and risk screening for each
- Design the Social Enterprise Strategy, including business model, governance and financial structuring, 3-year financial projections, and a risk matrix
- Facilitate internal validation and approval with the Senior Management Team and the Board
- Lead the operational set-up and piloting of at least one priority income-generating venture, including financial controls in coordination with Finance
- Build the capacity of designated YADAM staff to sustain the enterprise beyond the consultancy period
KEY DELIVERABLES
- Work plan
- Diagnostic of the institutional setting for transformation and market assessment report
- Board-approved Social Enterprise Strategy and implementation plan
- Operational tools (costing/pricing framework, business plan template, monitoring indicators)
- Final handover report and transition plan
Requirements
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Master's degree (or equivalent professional experience) in Economics, Social Entrepreneurship, Development Studies, Finance, or a related field
- 7–10 years of relevant experience designing and/or launching social enterprises, income-generating activities, or commercial ventures
- Strong understanding of business modeling, financial projections, and costing/pricing for social-impact ventures
- Familiarity with the Ethiopian non-profit regulatory environment and the East African social enterprise landscape
- Prior experience advising NGOs or mission-driven organizations in food systems/nutrition strongly preferred
- Proven track record of leading implementation, not only strategy design
