Job Description

Scope of responsibility:

Provide obstetrical care to pregnant women and their babies, doing follow up before, during and after delivery, according to MSF obstetrical and reproductive health protocols, universal hygienic and newborn caring standards and under supervision of a specialist doctor, in order to ensure their health conditions and avoid post-delivery complications.

Accountabilities:

Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring the implementation and continuity of antenatal and postnatal care, family planning, obstetrical care neonatal and comprehensive abortion care, management of victims of sexual violence, reproductive tract infections and Fistula care in accordance with MSF Reproductive Core Package of Activities and reinforce the implementation of standardized protocols.
  • Ensuring implementation of the PMTCT protocol in the ANC/delivery and PNC consultations (pre counselling, test and post counselling
  • Assessing the feasibility for referral of pregnant women form the TBAs to the OPD/MCH for medical evaluation and/or complicated deliveries.
  • Ensuring hygiene and Infection Prevention Control (including universal precautions) are met according to MSF specifications.
  • Performing cleaning and minor maintenance for biomedical equipment used. Following the user manual and protocols and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning.
  • In collaborations with NTS Guaranteeing a regular and ongoing supply of drugs and equipment required for maternity activities (including monitoring/consumption control/ordering of orders.
  • informing mothers and relatives about importance of breast feeding, vaccination and possible complications resulting from harmful traditional practices.
  • Ensuring patients’ right to privacy and confidentiality is respected

Specific Accountabilities:

  • Medical Care involves running mobile clinics services to hard to reach areas in Nekemte, this involves travel for 2 hours or more in rough road risk for road accident and other insecurity risk may occur to mitigate or minimise such risk, Folloing project standard field saftey rules and regulation, Compliance to MSF Behavioral Commitment,  and Adherance to MSF Charter and Principles is required
  • Work cosely with NAM and PMR in addressing the RH of the mobile clinic
  • Proper patient assessment as per MSF Clinical Guidelines
  • Using fact with data for RH Mobile clinic services improvement.
  • Referral to health centers for cases that need further medical attention.
  • Coordinate with NST, and NAM for patients that are critical if Health Center cannot provide medical care and have challenges of further referral of critical ill patients to hospital.
  • Collaborating with the P.C, NAM, PMR, Medco in the management of Sexual Violence cases
  • Daily, weekly, and monthly RH (Reproductive Health) data collection and reporting.[EM1] 
  • Provide quality Antenatal Care (ANC) consultations according to MSF reproductive health protocols, including assessment of pregnancy, identification of risk factors and complications, preventive care, counselling and preparation for delivery.
  • Provide Postnatal Care (PNC) consultations for mothers and newborns, including assessment for post-partum and neonatal complications, breastfeeding support, counselling and timely referral when required.
  • Provide comprehensive Family Planning (FP) services, including counselling, provision of available contraceptive methods, management of side effects and appropriate referral for methods or services not available at mobile clinic level.
  • Provide confidential, survivor-centred clinical care for survivors of sexual violence (SV) according to MSF protocols, including timely assessment, provision of the available medical package, appropriate documentation and referral for additional care when required.
  • Provide Safe Abortion Care (SAC) within the approved MSF reproductive health package and the midwife's professional scope of practice, including assessment, counselling, appropriate care, identification of complications and referral when required.
  • Support implementation of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) within the mobile clinics, including assessment of vaccination status, identification of eligible women and children, administration of vaccines according to the project package and national/MSF protocols, and appropriate documentation.
  • Ensure implementation of PMTCT activities within ANC and PNC consultations, including appropriate counselling, testing and referral according to the project protocol.
  • Identify high-risk pregnancies, obstetric and newborn emergencies during mobile clinic consultations, provide initial stabilization within the capacity of the mobile clinic and arrange timely referral to the appropriate health facility.
  • Ensure all reproductive, maternal and newborn care is provided according to MSF clinical guidelines, IPC standards, patient safety principles, confidentiality and respect for patient dignity and informed choice.
  • Provide health education and counselling to women, adolescents and caregivers on pregnancy danger signs, birth preparedness, breastfeeding, newborn care, family planning, vaccination, sexual and reproductive health and when to seek medical attention.
  • Maintain complete and accurate documentation of ANC, PNC, FP, SV, SAC and EPI activities, and contribute to daily, weekly and monthly reproductive health data collection and reporting. The existing JD specifically assigns RH data collection and reporting to the role.
  • Work closely with the NTS, NAM, PMR, Clinical Officer, HPCE team and other mobile clinic staff to ensure appropriate patient flow, continuity of care and referral.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to other mobile clinic team members on maternal, newborn and reproductive health matters within the midwife's competencies.

Participate in mobile clinic activities in hard-to-reach areas and comply with MSF security procedures, Behavioural Commitments, professional standards and MSF principles

Education:

  • Essential midwifery qualification or specialization.
  • Desired Bachelor in Midwifery.
  • Valid license or registration to practice as a midwife with the relevant national regulatory body in Ethiopia

Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years experience as midwife in antenatal, maternity, and labour ward services 

Languages:

High level command oral and written English; Afan Oromo highly desirable
