Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (HFE) is a pioneering organization dedicated to the prevention and treatment of obstetric fistula and the improvement of maternal health in Ethiopia. Founded on the principles of compassion and excellence, HFE is committed to restoring the health, dignity, and hope of women affected by obstetric fistula through comprehensive treatment, prevention, rehabilitation, and reintegration programs. One of HFE's key initiatives is Project Zero, which aims to achieve the eradication of obstetric fistula woreda by woreda, ensuring that no woman suffers unnecessarily from this preventable and treatable condition.

HFE has already launched and implemented Project Zero in selected areas of the country and is now planning to expand the program to Eastern Ethiopia, Somali Region, Erer Zone, Fiq Woreda. To support the successful implementation of this program, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia is seeking to recruit an experienced and qualified candidate for the position described below, in accordance with the specified job title and responsibilities.

Project Zero background

Project Zero is a woreda based comprehensive maternal health and obstetric fistula prevention initiative aimed at eliminating untreated obstetric fistula through community awareness, early identification, strengthened maternal healthcare services, mentorship, surveillance, and system strengthening. The project works closely with Woreda Health Offices, health facilities, communities, and Hamlin Fistula treatment centers to improve maternal health outcomes and ensure sustainability. This project started as a pilot project in 2023 in Ale and Didessa woreda in South western Oromia, Illuababor, Seharti  in Tigray, Fedis woreda in Eastern Oromia, Semen Bench woreda in South Western Ethiopia  , currently rolling out in Arbegona  in Sidama and Gutazer Gedebano Welene woreda in Central Ethiopia.

Job Summary

The Mentor will work to realize that the Hamlin model of Care and the latest global standards of health care will be practiced in the region. A Midwife Mentor must have depth and breadth of technical expertise and experience in the delivery of maternal, neonatal, child, and reproductive health services. In addition, this position requires quality improvement approaches as well as current trends in service delivery, training, and capacity building approaches that are based on scientific evidence. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities of Midwife Mentor include the following, but are not limited to:

• Support the woreda health centers through providing well-structured mentorship support
• Ensure the RMNCH units of the selected Health facilities are providing quality health service for women, girls and Children
• Transfer clinical skills and knowledge to the health workforce working at the health centers RMNCH unit
• Support staffs of RMNCH units to develop and implement personal development plan
• Ensure the standard of RMNCH Care as per the global, national and Hamlin standards are being carried out.
• Work in close collaboration and coordination with the woreda Health Office and stakeholders
• Work in coordination with the PZ Team, through providing regular updates on progress of achievements against set targets, challenges and successes, as well as ways forward for ongoing implementation.
• Provide needed technical support for woreda health offices and other stakeholders in the prevention of obstetric fistula, identification and referral of historic fistula patients and facilitate their treatment.
• Actively participate in the Fistula Patient Identification Process, in collaboration with prevention officer and other stakeholders in awareness creation, strengthen the existing referral system, and facilitate their treatment.
• Submit weekly, monthly and quarter reports to the Team leader and to other concerned bodies in consistent manner.
• Engage in the facilitation of different community services related to midwives’ activities, like conducting pregnant women conference, awareness creations campaigns and others
• Engage in the implementation and coordination of the Mentorship, facility, and community-based assessment and other project activities.
• Collaborate with the health extension workers, Health Development Armies and other involved groups in network creation during recruitment of pregnant women to the cohort.
• Ensures the success stories and mentorship documentations are well recorded.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisors
