Job Description

Position: Medical Laboratory technologist                           

Employment Type: Full-time, one-year contract (with the possibility of extension)                                                                                   

Place of Work: Addis Ababa with travel to regions as necessary

Position Summary

The Medical Laboratory Technologist will support laboratory strengthening activities, specimen management, biosafety and biosecurity practices, and Lab quality management and laboratory-based surveillance under the Global health Security (GHS) Project.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support laboratory diagnostic and surveillance activities of the project
  • Assist reginal and hospital labs in specimen collection, handling, storage, packaging, and transportation of specimens
  • support regional laboratories and hospital laboratories in testing, including molecular diagnostics, serology, and other relevant laboratory investigations
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory quality management systems
  • Support manages project laboratory supplies, reagents, and inventory systems to ensure uninterrupted laboratory operations
  • Support regional labs in implementation of biosafety and biosecurity measures
  • Participate in laboratory assessments, supervision, and quality assurance activities.
  • Maintain laboratory records and documentation.
  • Assist in equipment maintenance and inventory management
  • Support laboratory training and capacity-building initiatives
  • Prepare and submit laboratory activity reports.
  • Support laboratory molecular testing, serology and lab set up

Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory technology, Laboratory Sciences, or related field.
  • Minimum of 6 years and up to 10 years of relevant experience in diagnostic or public health laboratories.
  • Experience in laboratory quality management systems is desirable
  • Experience in infectious disease testing and surveillance programs is an advantage

Required Skills

  • Knowledge of laboratory biosafety and biosecurity principles.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Computer literacy and data management skills.
