Job Description

Background

Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) is an Ethiopian civil society organization re-registered on September 19, 2019, before the FDRE Civil Societies Organizations Authority as per Proclamation No. 1113/2019. LHR is seeking Two (2) Legal Aid Service Providers to conduct police station intake, beneficiary identification, case documentation, and legal support in Hawassa and Shashamene.

Role and Responsibilities

Under the guidance and supervision of the Senior Attorney, the Legal Aid Service Provider will perform the following duties:

  • Conduct daily visits to local police stations and detention centers to identify indigent and vulnerable pre-trial detainees.

  • Perform initial legal intake assessments, client interviews, and record beneficiary information into designated intake forms.

  • Provide basic legal rights education and initial advice to pre-trial detainees in accordance with LHR guidelines.

  • Organize case files, assist Senior Attorneys with documentation and clerical activities, and track detention timelines.

  • Maintain intake logs, assist with referrals, and prepare regular case reports for the Senior Attorney and Project Coordinator.

  • Perform all duties in compliance with professional and organizational ethical standards.

Professional Competencies:

  • University degree in law (LL.B) with 0 to 2 years of practical experience in legal aid delivery, paralegal work, or community legal outreach.

  • Sufficient knowledge of the Ethiopian legal system, criminal procedural laws, constitutional provisions, and rights of arrested persons.

  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Amharic. Working knowledge of Sidamu Afoo or Afaan Oromo is highly preferred.

  • Computer literacy and skills in internet usage and documentation.

Personal Qualities:

  • Proactive, goal-oriented, and results-driven with a commitment to human rights.

  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities, carry out multiple tasks simultaneously, and meet deadlines.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
