ROLE OVERVIEW
Are you a sharp, commercially minded legal professional eager to navigate the regulatory frontier of digital finance?
Virtual Equb PLC is seeking an exceptional Legal Advisor to serve as our primary legal strategist and corporate compliance anchor. As our Legal Advisor, you will safeguard the company's legal integrity, oversee contract management, navigate National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) regulatory frameworks, manage corporate governance, and provide executive legal counsel across all business operations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
- Regulatory Compliance & FinTech Governance
- Provide strategic legal guidance on National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) directives, payment system operator (PSO) regulations, data protection, and digital financial services laws.
- Monitor regulatory developments in the banking, FinTech, and telecommunications sectors, ensuring Virtual Equb PLC’s operations proactively align with legal standards.
- Serve as the main liaison between Virtual Equb PLC and regulatory authorities, government bodies, and legal registries.
- Contract Drafting, Review & Commercial Negotiation
- Structure, draft, negotiate, and review all corporate contracts, including banking partner agreements, vendor contracts, software licensing, non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), and service-level agreements (SLAs).
- Develop and maintain standardized company contract templates, terms of service, and user privacy policies for digital platforms.
- Corporate Law & Risk Management
- Advise executive leadership and department heads on corporate governance, employment law, operational risk mitigation, and commercial liability.
- Oversee legal disputes, debt recovery processes, and litigation management in coordination with external trial attorneys when necessary.
Ensure company policies, human resource procedures, and internal governance frameworks comply with Ethiopian labor laws and commercial codes.
- Provide management with regular reports on progress against the 2026 Annual Business Plan and recommend corrective or strategic interventions where required.
- Support business growth, process improvement, digitalization, and operational efficiency.
- Ensure that business activities are conducted in accordance with applicable company policies, legal requirements, and regulatory expectations.
Requirements
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES & EXPERTISE
- FinTech & Regulatory Mastery: Solid grasp of financial system laws, digital transactions, intellectual property, and NBE regulatory expectations.
- Contractual Precision: Exceptional drafting and analytical skills with high attention to legal nuance and commercial risk management.
- Executive Advisory: Ability to translate complex legal issues into clear, practical business advice for non-legal stakeholders.
- Integrity & Discretion: Absolute professional ethics, sound moral judgment, and unwavering commitment to confidentiality.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Education: Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from a recognized university. (A Master of Laws / LL.M. in Commercial Law is highly advantageous.)
- Licensure: Valid advocacy/legal practice license in Ethiopia.
- Professional Experience: Minimum 4 to 7 years of post-qualification legal experience in a corporate setting, law firm, financial institution, or tech enterprise.
- Industry Background: Direct experience in FinTech, Banking, Telecom, or Digital Payments is strongly preferred.
Language Skills: Native or full professional fluency in Amharic and English (written and spoken), with strong legal drafting capabilities.
