LIYANA HEALTH CARE Plc. (LHC) is an Integrated Healthcare Solutions Company that provides high quality, advanced & a yet accessible and affordable specialized clinical service, import and distributes pharmaceuticals, teaching health fields in Addis Ababa and Hawassa cities.

LIYANA HEALTH CARE PLC would like to recruit potential candidates for the position of Laboratory Department Head to assign at Yanet Trauma and Surgical Specialized Center – Hawassa city.

Position Summary

  • The Laboratory department Head is responsible for the planning, organizing and directing the overall operation of the Clinical Laboratories.
  • Activities included are performance of chemical, microscopic, bacteriologic tests and to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
  • Laboratory Head ensures that services are best quality, cost effective, and carried out in an efficient manner.
  • Assuring competency of all personnel formulating work plan and budget for the department and maintaining performance improvement activities in compliance with all applicable standards and protocols.
  • He/she also responsible for supervising the various tests, results, software systems, quality control, as well as supervising laboratory technicians and technologist working in the department.
  • Also responsible for providing direct routine laboratory services to patients in addition to his leading and coordinating duties.

Duties and Responsibilities

Managerial

  • Is member of Management Committee and participates in management team meetings.
  • Prepares activity plan and budget for the department (including all supplies required for Laboratory services), and participates in the overall hospital activity planning and budgeting, Prepares department budgets for personnel, operating expenses and capital equipment.
  • Manage department budget and other resources in efficient manner.
  • Participates in the recruitment and selection of Laboratory personnel and assures sufficient staffs are hired.
  • Work with Medical director on planning, organizing and directing laboratory operations and ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations, standards, and protocols.
  • Communicates and interprets policies and procedures to staff, and monitors staff practices and implementation.
  •  Proactively develops positive employee relations, incentives, and recognition programs. Promotes teamwork, mutual respect, and effective communication.
  • Prepare Lab staff schedule in such a way that essential laboratory services are available round the clock.
  • Evaluates the work performance of all laboratory staffs personnel, and implements discipline issues according to LHC policies.
  • Facilitate the development and delivery of in-service training to equip Laboratory staff with sufficient knowledge to ensure high quality of care as necessary.
  • Write periodic activity report and monitor performance against standards. 

Operational

  • Performs laboratory testing – hematology, immunohematology, bacteriology, mycology, urinalysis, immunology, chemistry, endocrinology, serology, and parasitology.
  • Obtains and processes specimens; performs tests; interprets and reports results.
  • Reviews test results, follows-up on abnormal and critical values.
  • Make daily rounds in Laboratory to judge effectiveness of operation, utilization of personnel and supplies, and general ethical and professional atmosphere.
  • Secure and maintain the physical facilities, equipment and supplies which are required to carry out effective patient care and create an optimum physical environment.
  • Initiate and actuate improved methods of services and direct their implementation.
  • Comply with all LHC policies and standards regarding ethical business practices; Interact professionally with patient/family with due respect and politeness.
  • Ensure patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Consult other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.
  • Establish and maintain standards of performance and ensures competency of personnel.
  • Promote effective intradepartmental relationships between clinical and pathology labs, recognizing results or problems in clinical lab that require referral to the Pathologist.
  • Ensure health and safety measures are in place to protect patients and staff from hazards and ensure that staffs strictly follow rules regarding safety and health.
  • Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.
  • Stays abreast of new tests, new procedures, and new technology in the Medical Technology field. Initiates discussion with medical and administrative personnel regarding implementation of new methodology, tests, and procedures as appropriate.
  • Maintain adequate stock of laboratory supplies, Manage laboratory inventory, establish preventative maintenance schedule for equipment,
  • Ensure adherence to dress code, neatness, and cleanliness of laboratory staffs.
  • Ensure that the hospital laboratory organization and service is superior or at least comparable to the best laboratories or diagnostic facilities in the country. 
  • Provide direct routine laboratory services to patients in addition to her/his managerial duties.


 Qualifications, Experience and Skills

 

 

Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology.

At least 3 years’ experience in the management of clinical laboratory.

Practical experience managing a team.

Previous experience in private sector is advantageous.



 

 

Strong planning, organizational and interpersonal skills.

Good communication skills.

Excellent computer skill.
