Job Description

Position: Field Epidemiologist

Employment Type: Full-time, one-year contract (with the possibility of extension)

Place of Work: Addis Ababa with travel to regions as necessary

Number of Positions: 1

Position Summary

The Field Epidemiologist will support disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, public health emergency response, and epidemiological analysis to strengthen health security systems and improve disease detection and response capacities. The position will contribute to strengthening national and sub-national health security systems through timely detection, assessment, reporting, and response to public health threats, while supporting evidence-based decision-making and capacity building initiatives.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Support implementation of disease surveillance activities at national and subnational levels.
  • Conduct epidemiological investigations of disease outbreaks and public health events, including case identification, contact tracing, risk factor assessment, and response

monitoring

  • Analyze and interpret surveillance and outbreak data to identify trends, detect anomalies, and guide public health interventions.
  • Support public health emergency preparedness and response activities.
  • Prepare and disseminate epidemiological reports, surveillance summaries, situation

reports (SitReps), bulletins, and technical briefs for stakeholders and decision-makers.

  • Provide technical support for surveillance system strengthening.
  • Facilitate training and mentoring of health workers on surveillance and outbreak response.
  • Ensure timely reporting of epidemiological findings to project stakeholders.
  • Participate in Rapid Response Team (RRT) deployments and field missions during outbreaks, emergencies, and other public health events as required.

Requirements

Qualifications and Experience Education

  • Master's degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, Veterinary Epidemiology, Biostatistics, One Health, or a related field from a recognized academic institution.
  • Training in Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) at the Intermediate or Advanced level is highly desirable and considered an asset.
  • Additional training or certification in disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, public health emergency management, health information systems, or data analysis
  • Demonstrated knowledge of epidemiological methods, public health surveillance

systems, and evidence-based public health practices acquired through formal education and professional training.

  • Relevant continuous professional development courses in emergency preparedness and response, International Health Regulations (IHR 2005), or global health security are

desirable.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, or public health emergency response or related public health programs
  • Demonstrated experience working with national public health surveillance systems, including data collection, reporting, monitoring, and coordination with relevant

stakeholders at national and sub-national levels.

  • Experience in participating in recent public health emergencies preparedness and response
  • Experience in preparing surveillance reports, situation updates, epidemiological summaries, and technical briefs for public health authorities and partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, government

institutions, and partners during routine surveillance and emergency response operations.

  • Experience using public health information systems and data analysis software such as DHIS2, Excel, Epi Info, SPSS, STATA, R, or similar tools is desirable.


Skills

  • Proficiency in epidemiological and statistical analysis software, including Epi Info, R, STATA, SPSS, Excel, and other data management and visualization tools used for public health surveillance and research.
  • Strong technical writing, report preparation, and communication skills, with the ability to produce high-quality surveillance reports, epidemiological updates, situation reports, and presentations for diverse audiences.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, including the capacity to identify

trends, interpret complex datasets, assess public health risks, and develop evidence-based recommendations.

  • Strong data management and quality assurance skills, including data cleaning, validation, monitoring, and ensuring the accuracy and completeness of surveillance and outbreak

response data.

  • Effective stakeholder engagement and interpersonal skills, with experience collaborating with government institutions, health facilities and multidisciplinary teams
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities in rapidly changing public health emergency and outbreak response settings.
  • Knowledge of public health surveillance systems, outbreak investigation methodologies, and emergency preparedness and response frameworks.
  • Strong organizational and coordination skills, with the ability to plan activities, meet deadlines, and support public health programs at national and sub-national levels.
