Job Description

Discovery Agent — Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Engagement: One-month paid pilot with potential for long-term work
Compensation: 75,000 ETB base + performance bonus of up to 25,000 ETB

About the Role

Alias Compass is seeking a Discovery Agent based in Addis Ababa to support a Creative Ecosystem Discovery focused on understanding the experiences, challenges, needs, and opportunities within Ethiopia’s creative industries.

This is not simply a survey or data-collection position. We are looking for someone who is naturally curious, takes initiative, thinks critically, and knows how to listen.

The Discovery Agent will engage directly with people and organizations across Addis Ababa, identify useful connections and opportunities, conduct structured Discovery conversations, and help us develop a deeper understanding of how the creative ecosystem operates.

What You’ll Do

  • Conduct structured Discovery interviews with artists, musicians, producers, directors, photographers, venue operators, promoters, and other creative professionals.
  • Listen carefully and ask thoughtful follow-up questions rather than simply moving through a questionnaire.
  • Build relationships with universities, radio stations, venues, studios, creative organizations, and other relevant establishments.
  • Identify organizations and networks that could help expand participation in the Discovery.
  • Follow promising leads and investigate new questions that emerge during the work.
  • Document interviews, observations, contacts, and findings accurately.
  • Communicate regularly with the Alias Compass team about what you are learning.
  • Help identify patterns, challenges, opportunities, and areas requiring further investigation.

Requirements

Who We’re Looking For

  • You should be:
  • Naturally curious and investigative.
  • A strong critical thinker and problem solver.
  • Comfortable taking initiative without needing constant direction.
  • A thoughtful listener who asks good follow-up questions.
  • Comfortable approaching and speaking with new people.
  • Observant and interested in understanding how and why things work.
  • Comfortable saying “I don’t know” and finding the correct answer rather than guessing.
  • Organized, dependable, and professional.
  • Fluent in Amharic.
  • Able to communicate effectively in English.
  • Based in Addis Ababa.

Experience in research, community engagement, media, music, entertainment, business development, journalism, or the creative industries is useful, but curiosity, critical thinking, initiative, and reliability are more important than a specific professional background.

Compensation

  • Base compensation: 75,000 ETB for the one-month pilot.
  • Performance bonus: Up to an additional 25,000 ETB based on quality of work, initiative, relationship development, interview quality, documentation, reliability, and overall contribution to the Discovery.
  • Maximum compensation: 100,000 ETB for the one-month pilot.

Long-Term Opportunity

Although this position begins as a one-month pilot, we are specifically looking for someone who could develop into a long-term Discovery Agent for Alias Compass in Ethiopia.

Strong performance may lead to ongoing paid Discovery assignments and a longer-term working relationship supporting future Compass projects in Ethiopia.

We are not simply looking for someone to complete a one-time assignment. We are looking for someone with the potential to grow with the work.
