Basic Function of the Position
The Biomedical Engineer is responsible for the management, maintenance, safety, and optimal performance of medical equipment and biomedical systems within the hospital. The role ensures that all medical devices are functional, safe, and compliant with applicable regulations and hospital policies, thereby supporting uninterrupted clinical services and patient safety.
Duties and Responsibilities
Medical Equipment Management
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee the installation, commissioning, maintenance, and repair of medical equipment.
- Ensure all biomedical equipment is functioning properly and available for clinical use.
- Maintain an up-to-date inventory of medical equipment, including service history and technical specifications.
Preventive and Corrective Maintenance
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules for medical devices.
- Diagnose equipment faults and perform corrective maintenance or coordinate with external service providers as required.
- Minimize equipment downtime through timely maintenance and effective troubleshooting.
Safety and Compliance
- Ensure medical equipment meets safety standards and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct routine safety checks, performance testing, and calibration of equipment as required.
- Investigate and report equipment-related incidents, failures, or hazards and recommend corrective actions.
Procurement and Technical Support
- Provide technical input for procurement of medical equipment, including specification development and evaluation.
- Support acceptance testing and commissioning of newly procured equipment.
- Advise hospital management on equipment replacement, upgrades, and life cycle management.
Training and User Support
- Train clinical and support staff on proper operation, basic troubleshooting, and safe use of medical equipment.
- Develop and distribute user guidelines and equipment handling instructions.
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, service reports, and equipment logs.
- Prepare and submit regular reports on equipment status, maintenance activities, and identified risks to the Operations Manager.
Authority
- Authority to inspect, test, and maintain medical equipment within the hospital.
- Authority to recommend removal of unsafe or non-functional equipment from clinical use.
- Authority to coordinate with vendors and service providers for equipment maintenance and repair.
- Authority to escalate critical equipment issues, safety risks, or resource needs to the Operations Manager.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications Required
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Clinical Engineering, Medical Electronics Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline from an accredited and recognized institution.
- Additional technical training in medical equipment maintenance or hospital technology management is an advantage.
Professional Registration and Certification
- Professional registration or eligibility for registration with the relevant national engineering or professional regulatory body, where applicable.
- Certification or formal training from medical equipment manufacturers or authorized service providers is an advantage.
- Training in occupational health and safety and medical equipment safety standards is desirable.
Prior Experience
- Minimum of 2–4 years of hands-on experience in biomedical or clinical engineering within a hospital or healthcare facility.
- Demonstrated experience in installation, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of medical equipment.
- Experience coordinating with equipment vendors, service providers, and clinical users.
- Exposure to equipment inventory management, lifecycle planning, and maintenance documentation is required.
Job Knowledge
- Solid knowledge of medical equipment operation, maintenance principles, and biomedical engineering practices.
- Understanding of medical device safety standards, calibration requirements, and regulatory compliance.
- Knowledge of infection prevention and control considerations related to medical equipment use and maintenance.
- Familiarity with hospital clinical workflows and the interaction between medical devices and patient care.
- Working knowledge of equipment documentation systems, maintenance logs, and reporting requirements.
- Basic understanding of procurement processes, technical specification development, and acceptance testing.
Skills and Abilities
- Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for biomedical equipment.
- Ability to plan and execute preventive maintenance schedules effectively.
- Good analytical skills to assess equipment performance, risks, and replacement needs.
- Effective communication skills to train and support clinical and non-clinical staff.
- Ability to prepare clear technical reports and maintain accurate maintenance records.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple priorities and urgent breakdowns.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary hospital environment.
