Associate Researcher I (Genomics)

 About Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI)

The Armauer Hansen Research Institute was established in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children Organizations, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. AHRI is a multidisciplinary research institute with a primary focus on communicable and non-communicable diseases, vaccine and pharmaceutical product development, diagnostic tools, and capacity building of researchers in Ethiopia. AHRI seeks to recruit a qualified candidate for the position of assistant researcher under the Genomics and Bioinformatics Division for the project titled “Impact of a Cryptosporidiosis Point-of-Care Test-and-Treat Strategy in Children with Diarrhea (CryptoT&T)”.

 Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct gDNA/RNA extractions from samples.
  • Perform conventional and realtime PCR.
  • Prepare solutions for different laboratory activities.
  • Perform experiments utilizing molecular biology, microbiology and /or immunology techniques and assays.
  • Assist the researcher project PI, students and all researchers within the project and the division in running assays such as qPCR, Western Blots and carry out data analysis
  • Perform sequencig and genotyping using sanger sequencing
  • Perform next generation sequencing (library preparation and sequencing).
  • Ensure the appropriate storage of laboratory reagents.
  • Receive, properly reciord and store samples at appropriate temperatures.
  • Ensure appropriate records are kept in the laboratory log books.
  • Assist with procurement requests related to this activity.
  • Prepare Standard Operating Procedures and adhere to the SOPs for these activities.
  • Participate in other field activities as required.
  • Work closely with researchers, field team, data management team and lab logistics officers.
  • Ensure standards and the quality of laboratory procedures by strictly following the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Adhere to biosafety measures adopted in the laboratory, minding the safety of oneself and others.

Requirements

Job Requirement

  • MSc in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Genomics, Public Health (MPH) or related Medical Sciences
  • Mandatory Two publication points
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5 for males and 3.25 for females

 

Desired Skills and Experiences:-

  • Experience in laboratory and research skills
  • Experience in molecular biology, and genomics laboratory techniques such as isolation and analysis of DNA, RNA, next-generation sequencing
  • Well-versed in the use of PCR as well as second and third generation sequencing  laboratory machines

 

Additional competencies

  • Excellent communication skills
  • High personal motivation and willingness to travel as required to the filed sites
  • Training and/or experience in microbiology and molecular biology techniques is a must
  • Previous experience in handling and processing respiratory specimens is an added advantage

Employment type: A contract for six months, renewable based on performance.
