Job Description

Position: Accountant

Employment Type: Full-time, one-year contract (with the possibility of extension)

Position Summary

The Accountant serves as a key member of the Finance and Administration team for the Global One Health Initiative, Addis Ababa Regional Office. The position reports directly to the Business Director and works closely with Accountants, Grant Managers, Project Managers, Procurement and Asset Management Officers, and other team members to support the effective implementation of financial and administrative operations.

The Accountant is responsible for ensuring compliance with Ethiopian government laws and regulations, Global One Health (GOH), LLC policies and procedures, and the requirements of partner institutions, including The Ohio State University and other sponsors. The role requires maintaining accurate financial records, supporting financial reporting, and ensuring that all transactions are processed in a timely, accurate, and compliant manner.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the finance team to ensure that all financial targets, deadlines, and operational expectations are met in a timely manner.
  • Prepare checks and other payments, ensuring all supporting documentation and approvals are complete and accurate. Maintain organized filing systems and properly label all financial records.
  • Prepare and manage VAT processes for all funds requiring reimbursement in accordance with Ethiopian Government VAT laws and regulations. Ensure proper communication, documentation, reconciliation, filing, and settlement of all VAT transactions in compliance with applicable requirements.
  • Prepare monthly payroll for each project and support day-to-day accounting activities, including coding and recording expenditures, revenues, and other financial transactions accurately.
  • Maintain complete payment vouchers and supporting documents for all transactions.
  • Prepare and deliver bank letters, collect credit advice and bank statements, and ensure all bank-related transactions are processed promptly.
  • Manage petty cash operations, including maintaining adequate balances, securing supporting receipts, conducting monthly reconciliations, and processing replenishments as required.
  • Prepare and submit income tax, pension, and withholding tax payments within statutory deadlines. Maintain accurate tax records and VAT reports for submission to the relevant tax authorities.
  • Safeguard checkbooks and ensure that payments are released only after all required approvals, verifications, and supporting documentation have been completed.
  • Support internal and external audits by providing required documentation, responding to audit inquiries, and coordinating with auditors as necessary.
  • Assist the Business Director with additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Ensure that all assigned tasks are completed proactively, in accordance with organizational policies and procedures, and are properly documented and settled within required timelines.

Other Responsibilities

  • Scan and archive original financial documents before submission to Headquarters.
  • Provide support to other accounting staff and perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Maintain proper records management and document retention practices.

Requirements

Required Educational Background and Experience

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, and a related field from a recognized institution.
  • At least four years of relevant experience in accounting, finance, and administrative operations.
  • Demonstrated experience in transaction processing, financial recordkeeping, reconciliations, and compliance-related activities.
  • Experience working with donor-funded projects, international organizations, NGOs, or research institutions is an advantage.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience using accounting and financial management software, including QuickBooks.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial controls, and Ethiopian tax regulations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Amharic.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in diverse and multidisciplinary teams.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and commitment to confidentiality.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities within deadlines.
