About HHRC
Hararghe Health Research Collaboration (HHRC) is a research and public health civil society organization working to strengthen health research, evidence generation, and public health capacity in Ethiopia.
HHRC is seeking a qualified, experienced, and highly motivated Accountant to manage the organization's accounting and financial operations and support effective financial management of donor-funded programmes.
Job Purpose
The accountant will be responsible for maintaining accurate accounting records, financial reporting, budget monitoring, payroll and statutory compliance, grant accounting, banking, internal controls, and audit support.
The position will allocate approximately 30% of its time to HHRC institutional financial management and 70% to supporting Hararghe Health Research Partnership (HHRP) programmes implemented through HHRC. The Accountant will ensure that financial transactions, records, reporting, and compliance requirements for HHRC and HHRP are appropriately maintained and reported separately.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Maintaining complete and accurate accounting records and the general ledger.
- Recording and reviewing financial transactions and preparing monthly trial balances.
- Preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports and financial analyses.
- Managing bank accounts and preparing payment documentation in accordance with approved procedures.
- Conducting monthly bank reconciliations and investigating discrepancies.
- Monitoring cash flow, expenditures, and budget utilization.
- Preparing budget variance analyses and supporting financial forecasting.
- Managing grant accounting and ensuring compliance with donor financial requirements.
- Preparing and submitting payroll and ensuring accurate calculation of statutory deductions.
- Preparing and submitting PAYE, pension, and other statutory reports and payments within required deadlines.
- Maintaining the fixed asset register and supporting periodic asset verification.
- Reviewing financial aspects of procurement and supplier payment documentation.
- Monitoring staff advances and ensuring timely settlement.
- Maintaining complete and properly organized financial documentation and records.
- Ensuring compliance with financial policies, donor requirements, and internal controls.
- Supporting and coordinating internal and external audits.
- Supervising and providing technical guidance to the Cashier.
- Supporting the development and improvement of financial systems and procedures.
- Performing other duties assigned by the Executive Manager or Finance Manager that are consistent with the position.

Requirements
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Professional accounting certification or progress toward a recognized professional qualification is an advantage.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in accounting or financial management.
- Demonstrated experience in financial reporting, bank reconciliation, payroll, tax and statutory compliance, and budget monitoring.
- Experience in NGOs, CSOs, research institutions, or donor-funded projects is highly desirable.
- Experience in grant accounting and donor financial reporting is an advantage.
- Practical experience using accounting software, preferably QuickBooks or similar systems.
- Good knowledge of Ethiopian tax, pension, and financial requirements.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills and ability to work with financial data.
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Experience managing finances for multiple projects or grants.
- Experience working with international donors and institutional partners.
- Experience establishing or strengthening financial systems and internal controls.
- Knowledge of accounting standards and good financial management practices.
- Experience supporting external audits and donor financial reviews.
